Sony SS-CS5M2 Bookshelf Speakers – 3-Way High-Res Audio

The Sony SS-CS5M2 might look familiar on the outside, but inside, it’s a whole new story. While the cabinet size hasn’t changed, the internals have been completely reworked. What used to be a two-way speaker with a super tweeter is now a full-fledged three-way design. The old super tweeter has stepped up as the main tweeter, and the former tweeter now handles midrange duties.

You’re now getting a real three-way setup, complete with internal bracing that gives the cabinet a solid feel and a more precise sound. The design upgrades aren’t just for show—they make a difference.

This speaker is also High-Res Audio certified, and it comes with an impressive spec sheet:

The Mark II brings a more mature tuning. Where the original SS-CS5 could sometimes sound a bit hollow in the mids or overly sharp between 4–6kHz, the updated version smooths those edges out. It’s got a slightly warmer character, better vocal clarity, and a more even top end. It’s still not going to rattle your walls with bass straight out of the box, but with a touch of EQ, it really opens up.

Compared to the original, the Sony SS-CS5M2 handles the midrange and treble with more control. You lose that occasional harshness and gain a more natural, balanced sound.

What’s improved?

Add a subwoofer and dial in some EQ, and the Sony SS-CS5M2 becomes a serious contender under $250. Even without a sub, just placing them closer to a wall can help bring out a bit more low-end. Either way, Sony has done it again—this is a fantastic update to an already beloved speaker.
