Moody Metropolis 500T – Joker-Inspired Film Recipe For Fujifilm

Mood: Joker Inspired, Dark, Moody, High Contrast, Low Light

A dark and moody low light film recipe with a greenish hue, inspired by the Joker, suitable for all Fujifilm X-Series cameras.

The recent release of the 2024 Joker film trailer captivated audiences with its compelling visuals, prompting me to channel this creative energy into developing a unique addition to my Fujifilm recipes. Inspired by the movie’s dark, atmospheric tones, I set out to create the Moody Metropolis 500T—a one-of-a-kind film simulation with custom settings that mimic the aesthetic of the Joker movie. Based on the Classic Negative simulation, this recipe underwent numerous hours of meticulous fine-tuning.

My explorations took me on night photo walks through the darkest corners of Kuala Lumpur, searching for ideal settings that embody the film’s moody essence. This guide delves into the Moody Metropolis 500T, discussing its development, settings, and how to capture evocative images that resonate with the somber and captivating aesthetic of its cinematic inspiration.

Background and Inspiration Of The Moody Metropolis 500T Film Recipe

The Moody Metropolis 500T film simulation recipe draws its inspiration from the gritty, urban atmosphere depicted in the 2024 Joker film. Set against a backdrop of societal decay and personal turmoil, the film uses a distinct color palette that emphasizes deep greens, muted ambers, and shadowy blacks. This visual style serves not only to heighten the emotional intensity of the narrative but also to evoke a sense of unease and contemplation.

Fujifilm’s Classic Negative film simulation, the base for Moody Metropolis 500T, is itself modeled after the Superia film stock, known for its high contrast color reproduction and dynamic tonal range. By tweaking this simulation, the Moody Metropolis 500T aims to replicate the cinematic feel of celluloid film used in many classic movies, including the color grading styles typical of films shot on Kodak Vision3 500T (tungsten) film stock, which are known for their cooler, moodier undertones, and higher contrast. The Shadow and Color adjustment are left on default setting at 0 to avoid harsh shadow and color.

Rather than opting for the Eterna/Cinema (used for the Teal Obscura), I chose the Classic Negative for its enhanced tonal range, which truly delivers a more dynamic visual impact. This decision has proven to be highly effective, as it does not disappoint in bringing out rich, vivid details in the images.

Achieve Dark & Moody Cinematic Street Photography

The Moody Metropolis 500T excels in street photography, where its ability to render complex lighting and urban textures can be fully utilized. Photographs taken with this recipe often showcase a dramatic interplay between light and shadow, highlighting the isolating and sometimes melancholic atmosphere of urban environments.

The Moody Metropolis 500T is best used in low-light conditions by leveraging higher ISO settings, it allows photographers to capture detailed scenes even in dimly lit environments, without a substantial loss of image quality. This makes it an ideal choice for those looking to preserve clarity and detail in less-than-optimal lighting situations. To capture images using this Joker film recipe, it’s essential to shoot in manual mode and slightly underexpose your shots to achieve the desired moody and dark aesthetic.

Tips: Use manual mode, and when shooting in low light, always try to incorporate tungsten or fluorescent lighting, as well as scenes with orange hues, to enhance the visual impact.

These Fujifilm custom settings form the core of the Moody Metropolis 500T film recipe. The adjustments in white balance enhance the hue tones while maintaining cooler, desaturated shadows, mimicking the film’s distinctive tonal balance. The increase in shadow tone deepens the blacks, adding to the dramatic effect, while the reduction in color saturation prevents the colors from becoming too vivid, thus maintaining a more subdued and realistic portrayal.

The recipe is versatile enough to handle a variety of lighting conditions. In bright daylight, the DR400 setting helps manage highlights effectively, preserving details that might otherwise be lost. Under artificial or tungsten lighting, the white balance adjustments come into play, with a greenish tone to deliver images with a haunting, cinematic quality. I recommend shooting in low-light conditions, especially at night, as this recipe truly excels.
